In one scene they attempt to divert the ship by manually activating the ship's bowthruster. A thruster is a propeller in a transverse direction. This allows the ship to turn more efficiently when docking. However the thruster loses any efficiency above approximately 5 knots. In the film they use it at 17 knots. Secondly, a thruster is powered by an electric motor of at least 500 kW, yet they manage to turn it by hand. That handle does not exist in real life, and no one would be able to turn it anyway. There are 2 clear references to Speed: Tune-Man, the owner of the $150,000 boat, is the same as the Jaguar owner which is destroyed by Jack (Reeves) in order to get into the bus - when Jason Patric asks him the boat, after introducing himself as police officer, you can hear Tune Man say something about the insurance. The second, near the end, while Sandra Bullock starts her driving exam, she almost hits a bus very similar to the famous 2525.
When the oil tanker blows up, if you slow the video down you can see a cow go flying out of the explosion in the upper right corner of the screen.
