Ronin movie corrections

Mistakes

During the initial chase with the Audi S8 immediately after the messed-up arms deal, you can see exhaust fumes and tire smoke from the leading camera car in most front shots of the gang. See more...

Trivia

In many of the stunt car scenes you can see the actors apparently driving. The producers used British RHD cars and fitted phoney steering wheels on the passenger sides to make it look as if the stars were really driving. See more...

Comments made in brackets are corrections from other visitors. As such, any aggressive/abusive corrections (and I get quite a few) written as if they're comments I've made myself will be ignored. To submit your own corrections for mistakes, just click the edit icon under an entry, then choose "correct entry". Some entries have "duplicated entry" after them - these are entries which were already listed on the main page, but were submitted again. I occasionally leave these online for a while, just in case they were moved in error, so don't worry about pointing them out to me.

Entry When Gregor tries to sell the case, he puts the Jeep into park. But he jolts the car forward a minute later without shifting into drive. [The car has a manual transmission; there is no "park". Gregor had his left foot on the clutch, his right foot on the brake, and the car was still in gear. When he wanted the car to lurch forward suddenly he took his foot off the brake and gave the car gas while letting out the clutch.]
Entry After the ambush, Reno and De Niro set off in the Mercedes. As they do a reverse hand brake turn, you see a sunroof on the car. In the next overhead shot, there is no sunroof. A couple of shots later De Niro pops up again out of the sunroof with the bazooka. [This shot is filmed from a significant distance above and forward of the car. As such, the edges of the sunroof's body-color panel are difficult to make out, but they are there faintly. It is the same car. (Using your DVD player's zoom feature helps to make it more obvious if you can't make it out normally).]
Entry During the shooting in the Arles amphitheater, when one of the Russians shots a man, you can see a drop of blood hitting the camera lens. [See Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, etc etc. This is a dramatic effect, not a film mistake.]
Entry Sam, Vincent and Dierdre walk toward the arena at Arles looking for Gregor. The camera follows from a low angle and at the end of the shot you can see three people on top of a building watching the scene. [They're in one of the most popular tourist areas of the country. It would not be unreasonable for sight-seers to be on top of a roof looking down.]
Entry The fourth shot after De Niro and Reno run over the ice at the ice rink, is a shot of the panicking crowd. The camera pans and we see a soundgirl with a shotgun microphone pointing it at the crowd. Than we see a 35mm camera on a steadicam filming the crowd. The operator of the camera that is filming all this notices it and starts to pan faster, but you can hardly miss the white camera body and the green illuminating steadicam monitor. [We are watching a TELEVISED skating event. There are several cameras and microphone operators in full view in other scenes.]
Entry In the scene where Robert De Niro and the girl are having a car chase, after the girl leaves the tunnel and is swerving through all the construction workers. There is a shot from inside the car where you can see her driving through everyone. The speedometer reads zero mph. [Considering the damage the car has sustained it's likely the speedometer was broken.]
Entry When they are going over their plan in the apartment, Gregor is keen to go ahead there and then. But why would he be so keen, if he hasn't spray-painted the case yet? [At this point Gregor is trying fit in as one of them. He knows they will not change the plan, and so suggests it as a way of convincing the others he is an eager member of the team.]
Entry During the gun purchase, the seller says that his boss wants to check the money and that the rest of the guns are in the other car. Spence then asks Vincent for some of the money, but the seller never takes it from him, he just starts walking into the tunnel. When Spence and Vincent enter the tunnel, the seller tells them to stop, confers with his boss, and tells them that everything is good. He never had the money to check. [That's because it was a trap. The seller never wanted to see the money, he wanted to get the men into the tunnel so the sniper could kill them.]
Entry When Gregor shoots the guy in the car after nearly killing the little girl, blood sprays over the window, but there's no bullet hole. If the bullet exited his head, hence spraying blood, it should have gone through the window too. [If Gregor used hollow-points, which you don't know, it is possible. Because the hollow-point bullet stops on impact, blasting a shockwave through the head which would form the exit wound.]
Entry At the end, when Gregor gets shot in the head by Miki, the mark on his forehead is visible, where he is about to get shot. Frame by frame required. [As it says quite clearly in the guidelines, something that requires slow motion to spot is almost invariably not a valid mistake. Read them next time.]
Entry In the middle of the film when De Niro and the others are in the car going to get Gregor, De Niro says, "He's at the arena," but Gregor hasn't arrived at the arena yet. [Gregor is in a bar which is right beside the arena, to say that's he's "at the arena" would be understood by most people to include the general area. In addition DeNiro would know that Gregor would want to do the exchange in a public place and would assume that if his phone signal is located near the arena then he is headed there.]
Entry When Gregor escapes from Sam in the coliseum he jumps over a rail just as Sam fires a shot at him. The bullet misses, but there is no impact on the huge wall directly behind Gregor. [The camera shot/angle is too far away to determine that.]
Entry When the chase between the 5 Series BMW and the Peugeot 406 starts, they both whip around a roundabout. In the background is a gun metal grey Rover 800 Hatchback. Couple of shots later as the two cars are absolutely speeding along the river, the same Rover 800 is now ahead of them in the traffic. [There is more than one Rover 800 that was made, your just looking at another Rover 800 not the same one from a previous scene.]
Entry When Spence checks the armaments they are going to buy, he states "it's not all here". They have a gunfight and return to base. No-one makes any comment that they need to obtain the missing armaments. [They may consider it so obvious as to not be worth stating. Either way it's not a mistake.]
Entry In the coliseum Sam is wounded by a Teflon bullet that pierces his armoured vest. A Teflon bullet is pointed to aid penetration and only has a thin coating of Teflon on it. Ricocheting off the wall would disrupt both of these penetration aids and make it most unlikely that the bullet would penetrate the vest. [The Teflon bullet penetrated the vulnerable side of the vest, not the front.]
Entry in the coloseum when the Irish guy fires his gun, the bullet ricochets and hits De Niro. After this he sees that the bullet has been upgraded with teflon (for piercing bullet-proof vests). But how can the armour piercing bullet ricochet from a sand/chalk building block? The bullet should have gone into the wall. [The same way any other bullet would: It hit at an angle, and was deflected. The fact it's an armour-piercing bullet should make little difference. Ricocheting bullets don't bounce off surfaces like rubber balls.]
Entry After Gregor steals the case, Sam and the others hole up in a flat to treat Larry's wound, during this scene the idea that they can trace Gregor through his cellphone is put forward. Vincent asks Sam if that is possible, but isn't that how they tracked the case in the first place (through the bald guy's cellphone). [Yes, but when they were tracing the movements of the case during the ambush attempt, it was Gregor that was doing the tracing. Obviously, he isn't there to run a trace, using his equipment, if it's him they are trying to locate.]
Entry De Niro pronounces 'Hereford' incorrectly when interrogating Sean Bean's character. He say 'Here ford', as in two different words. It should be pronounced 'Herryford'. I am surprised Sean Bean didn't correct this. [De Niro's character is American and he wouldn't know the correct pronunciation. As for Sean Bean's character, he doesn't correct De Niro because he is a fraud, as evidenced by the fact that he doesn't know what color the Hereford boathouse is. His accent and background are faked.]
Entry In the first scene outside the bar, Robert De Niro hides his gun behind three stacked beer bottle crates. He then slides the top crate sideways to cover the gun, but in the next shot the top two crates have been moved over. [He slides the top two crates over in the first place.]
Entry In the beginning of the movie, when the weapon deal is taking place in the centre of Paris, Robert de Niro and company are waiting in an Audi S8. The head lights are not burning, but when a shot is shown from the inside of the car, you can see that the dashboard lights are on. This can only be so if the head lights are also lit. [In all Audi Ss (S4, S8, and so on) the dashboard lights go on when the ignition is on, or after shutting down the engine but before taking the keys out, regardless of whether the lights are on or not.]
